How to upgrade from GFI MailArchiver 3

Answer

Please follow the recommended migration path from GFI MailArchiver 3 to the latest version:
  1. Ensure that the system meets the increased system requirements
    • IMPORTANT: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 no longer supported
  2. Backup your GFI MailArchiver folder and databases
  3. Take note of the current configuration (including data sources, SMTP settings and Archive Stores details)
  4. Uninstall GFI MailArchiver 3
  5. Install the latest version of GFI Archiver
  6. Reconfigure the product from scratch based on the notes taken in the previous steps including the data sources, SMTP settings and Archive Stores

To upgrade the existing installation (which is not recommended) follow these guidelines:

IMPORTANT: Do not upgrade directly from GFI MailArchiver 3 to the latest version.

  4. Upgrade to GFI MailArchiver 4 (please contact GFI Software technical support in order to obtain the installer)
    • Do not enable archival of emails at this point
    • If Microsoft Access based Archive Stores were used in GFI MailArchiver 3 they must be converted to Microsoft SQL based Archive Stores. GFI MailArchiver 4 contains a tool for this conversion. It must be used at this stage as it is not possible to do it later.
  5. Upgrade to GFI MailArchiver 6 build 20100702 (please contact GFI technical support in order to obtain the installer)
    • Do not enable archival of emails at this point
  6. Upgrade to the latest version

Notes

  • GFI MailArchiver 3 databases can be browsed and searched from in current versions of the product, but you cannot archive further data into them
  • Databases configured in the Database Management feature of GFI MailArchiver 3 are not upgraded and will not be listed in the GFI MailArchiver Archive Stores page
  • Ensure to also read the general How to upgrade article including the link to the manual found within that article
