Using Billing Code or Commas in the Dial-String Trigger the Message 'Unknown Error'

Overview

This article provides the details of what happens when a billing code or commas are included within the dial-string and how to address it.
A billing code or commas within the dial-string causes the outbound fax to fail with the error 'Unknown error' when using GFI FaxMaker with FoIP solutions.

Environment

  • GFI FaxMaker
  • Fax-over-IP (FoIP)

Root Cause

Any characters which are not supported by the PABX may lead to a failure of the outbound fax.

Resolution

  1. Remove any unsupported characters from the dial-string such as commas, billing code(s) and any other characters than digits.

Note: A "." (dot) and a "," (comma) within a dial-string is allowed and supported in the case where it will be interpreted as a pause by the PABX.
