'Filter by Reputation' Operation in GFI WebMonitor

Overview

This article details the operation of the Filter by Reputation option in GFI WebMonitor.

Information

Every time you create or edit a policy that should apply to Websites or Applications, you have the option to enable the Filter by Reputation option. By default, the entire range of the index is set to be applied to every policy, but there are situations in which you may need to change those values.

The Filter by Reputation option works with a range from 1 to 4, and it matches the index reputation of a page from 100 to 0. Thus, 1 represents a site with a very good or high reputation, and 4 represents a site with very bad or low reputation. In the logic of the policies, it works with a logical 'AND' operator. So, the policy must apply to the user 'AND' to the website 'AND' be within the filter range.

  • All policies have the full range of the index set to be applied in any policy by default, but it can be adjusted accordingly.
  • Both arrows with the minimum and maximum values can be moved.
  • The policy applies to the sites or application that match the values set there.
  • In the image above, you can see that all values are selected, so it means that no matter what the index is, the policy is applied.

Now, if you have a policy set to allow specific categories, and you want to block the low index reputation, you would set the minimum at 1 and maximum at 2, as shown in the image below. In this case, the policy is set to allow, but it will only apply to sites that have an index within the range set on the policy.

Another situation in which it would be useful to use the Filter by Reputation adjustment is when you have the policy to block malicious sites, but you would like to make an exception for sites that have a good reputation. In this case, you would set the filter with a minimum value of 3 and a maximum of 4, as shown in the image below. In this case, the sites that have an excellent reputation are not blocked, because their index is not within the range set in the policy.
