High rate of handshaking failures with GFI FaxMaker and a Brooktrout TR114 device

Answer

PROBLEM

A high rate of handshaking failures occur with GFI FaxMaker when using a Dialogic Brooktrout TR114 fax board.  This issue is usually exemplified after an upgrade of GFI FaxMaker.

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI FaxMaker 14
  • GFI FaxMaker 2011
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional (x86)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (x86)
  • Dialogic Brooktrout TR114 fax board (using version 4.3 drivers)

SOLUTION

Attempt to reinstall the TR114 drivers:
  1. Remove the TR114 drivers from add/remove programs
  2. Temporarily disable any Antivirus applications in use
  3. Navigate to the ..Program Files\GFI\FaxMaker\Brooktrout directory in Windows Explorer
  4. Run the brooktrout_tr114.exe file to install the TR114 drivers
  5. Post driver install, be sure to complete the wizard which should appear for this device
If the steps above do not reduce the handshaking failure rate:

GFI FaxMaker 14:
  1. Download: http://ftp.gfisoftware.com/patches/FM14/20080208/FM141_PATCH_20080328_01.zip
  2. Follow the readme found in the zip file for patch application
GFI FaxMaker 2011:
  1. Download: ftp://ftp.gfisoftware.com/patches/FM2011/20101112/FM2011_PATCH_20110207_01.zip
  2. Follow the readme found in the zip file for patch application

CAUSE

The drivers do not upgrade with the GFI FaxMaker upgrade process.  The reason for this is that the Dialogic Brooktrout TR114 series fax boards have been end-of-life by manufacturer for several years.  Therefore, the drivers are very dated, causing unexpected results in specific scenarios.
