Error: "1923.Service GFI Archiver VSS Writer Service (MARVSS) could not be installed." When Installing or Upgrading GFI Archiver

Overview

This article provides the steps to uninstall GFI Archiver properly and delete all services from the system when you encounter errors after a failed installation or upgrade of GFI Archiver.

 

Information

When installing or upgrading GFI Archiver, it fails and performs a rollback. An error in the mar*_x64.log or marc*_x86.log located in the %temp% directory can be found after a failed installation:

Error 1923.Service GFI Archiver VSS Writer Service (MARVSS) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services. MSI (s) (B8:94) [18:18:22:599]: Product: GFI Archiver. -- Error 1923.Service GFI Archiver VSS Writer Service (MARVSS) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.

The error below appears in the application event logs:

Event ID: 11923
Description:Product: GFI Archiver -- Error 1923.Service GFI Archiver VSS Writer Service (MARVSS) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.

This issue occurs because the service was not uninstalled properly, most likely due to backup software still present in the system. 

 

Process

WARNING: The following procedure contains instructions on how to delete services and how to edit the registry. If this is done incorrectly, it can damage the system. It is recommended to create a backup before following this procedure. During the procedure, please make sure that you install GFI Archiver into the same directory as the previous GFI Archiver installation.

Part 1

First, uninstall GFI Archiver from the Control Panel, and use one of the following methods to delete GFI Archiver services.

Method 1 - Via the sc.exe Command (preferred method)
  1. Open the Command Prompt.
  2. Execute the following commands based on the version that was installed.
    • GFI MailArchiver 2014 or later:
      • sc.exe delete MARCore
      • sc.exe delete MARIMAP
      • sc.exe delete MARMAIS
      • sc.exe delete MARSearch
      • sc.exe delete MARStore
      • sc.exe delete MARVSS
    • GFI MailArchiver 2013:
      • sc.exe delete MAR9Core
      • sc.exe delete MAR9Core2
      • sc.exe delete MAR9IMAP
      • sc.exe delete MAR9MAIS
      • sc.exe delete MAR9Search
      • sc.exe delete MAR9Store
      • sc.exe delete MAR9VSS

 

Method 2 - Via the Registry Editor
  1. Open the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
  3. Delete the following subkeys based on the version that was installed:
    • GFI MailArchiver 2014 or newer:
      • MARCore
      • MARIMAP
      • MARMAIS
      • MARSearch
      • MARStore
      • MARVSS
    • GFI MailArchiver 2013:
      • MAR9Core
      • MAR9Core2
      • MAR9IMAP
      • MAR9MAIS
      • MAR9Search
      • MAR9Store
      • MAR9VSS
  4. Reboot the server.
  5. Verify that GFI Archiver services have been removed from services.msc.

 

Part 2
  1. Delete the GFI Archiver directory from the registry.
    • GFI Archiver 2015: HKLM\SOFTWARE\GFI\MAR11

    • GFI MailArchiver 2014HKLM\SOFTWARE\GFI\MAR10

    • GFI MailArchiver 2013:

      • 32-bit machine: HKLM\SOFTWARE\GFI\MAR9

      • 64-bit machine: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GFI\MAR9

  2. Rerun the installation.
  3. Run the BulkSchemaUpgrader tool manually and upgrade the schema of the Archive Stores.
