Error: 'Invalid User' When Trying to Save Exceptions Under the Licensing Node

Overview

When trying to use exceptions for users like NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM or NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON under the Licensing Node, the changes cannot be saved and the below message is displayed:

Invalid user

Process

  1. Stop all the GFI WebMonitor services.
  2. Navigate to GFI\Webmonitor\Data and make a backup of FilterRules.xml in another location.
  3. Open the file with Notepad and search for "license excepted users". These exceptions need to be added there:
    • S-1-5-18 NT Authority\System false S-1-5-19 NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE false S-1-5-20 NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE false S-1-5-7 NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON false.
    • The file should then look like: 7445a679-c3dd-45fe-8bdf-a5c694afa139 license excepted users 0 true Regular 0001-01-01T00:00:00 Allow 127.0.0.1 S-1-5-18 NT Authority\System false S-1-5-19 NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE false S-1-5-20 NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE false S-1-5-7 NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON false.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Start the services stopped in step 1.

Note: The users will not appear on the list of exceptions, but they should not be counted anymore.

Important: This is only a workaround and if the client changes any policy via the user interface, those changes in the XML file will be lost and will need to be re-added after.
