After a call is placed successfully (which triggers a ringing on the remote side) any errors which occurs during the negotiation phase, transmission phase or cal termination phase are reported as a handshaking error: 54.
For CAPI fax devices:
The handshaking error:54 does not indicate in what stage the error occurred, so a closer look into the available logs files is necessary.

- the remote party in question is incompatible to handle specific fax tones
- the remote party or any middle men do not support ECM : here
- the wrong CAPI profile is selected for the attached CAPI fax device: here
- the fax device / router configuration settings or PBX settings are either incorrect or not optimal for the customer's environment: here
- Other reasons which the Support Technician needs to identify
For fax modem devices:
- Handshaking Error: 54
- the remote party in question is not a fax machine
- the remote party in question is incompatible to handle specific fax tones
- the remote party or any middle men do not support ECM : here
- the wrong modem profile is selected for the attached modem fax device: here
- incorrect configuration settings for Dialogic Brooktrout TR1034: here
