Overview
This article explains the following two methods for configuring LANCOM devices using the LANCAPI application with GFI FaxMaker:
Process
Regardless of the method chosen to configure LANCOM devices, there are multiple sub-processes and steps that must be performed in order. Please refer below to understand the steps for each method.
Method One: Configuring LANCAPI Devices Using T.30 Over CAPI
This is the recommended method for configuring LANCOM devices using LANCAPI. Perform these sub-processes and their steps in the order below:
-
Preliminary Preparation for the Configuration
Take these actions for preliminary preparation:
-
Download LANCAPI from LANCOM’s website. The user will need to have a user account to access the download section.
-
To use T.30 over CAPI, the user will need to activate the Fax Gateway option by acquiring a license from LANCOM.
-
More information about the Fax Gateway option can be found in the LANCOM device documentation.
-
-
Activate Router License
Activate the LANCOM licenses for the router by following the steps below:
-
Click on Router Options.
-
Follow the steps by Registration of Options Wizard to complete the license activation.
-
At the end of the wizard, the user gets an Activation Code to be inserted in the LANCOM device configuration.
-
Configure LANCOM as a Fax Gateway
Follow these steps to configure the LANCOM Device to be used as a Fax Gateway:
- To activate the Fax Gateway option, access the LANCOM device configuration and go to Activate Software Option and enter the Activation Code generated earlier.
Note: Learn more about the method to access the Activate Software Option in the LANCOM device documentation that is being used. The method differs according to the method used to access the device configuration.
- Once the Fax Gateway option is activated, the properties of the LANCOM device should show this information as seen in the screenshot below:
- The LANCOM device ISDN interface(s) should be configured correctly in order to be able to send faxes through the device.
Note: More information on how to configure the interfaces can be found in the LANCOM device documentation. The information varies depending on the LANCOM device model.
-
LANCAPI should also be configured from the LANCOM device configuration. The screenshot below shows which options need to be configured:
- To activate the Fax Gateway option, access the LANCOM device configuration and go to Activate Software Option and enter the Activation Code generated earlier.
-
Configure LANCOM Device Lines on GFI FAXmaker
LANCAPI should be running on the same machine where GFI FAXmaker is installed and detected successfully. Follow these steps to configure LANCOM Device Lines.
- Go to GFI FAXmaker Configuration > Lines/Devices/Properties.
- Add a new line.
- If using FaxMaker version 14.x:
- Set ‘Device Type’ to 'ISDN BRI CAPI 2.0 devices' and click OK.
- If using FaxMaker version 2011 or higher:
- Set 'Device Type' to 'Gateway devices' and click OK.
- Set ‘ISDN Type’ to LANCOM 1700 Series or LANCOM 1800 Series depending on the model being used.
- At this stage the Lines on the LANCOM devices should be available for use, as illustrated in the image below:
Method Two: Configuring LANCAPI Devices Using CAPI Faxmodem over LANCAPI
Although T.30 over LANCAPI is the recommended method of configuration, using a CAPI Faxmodem over LANCAPI can be used as an alternative if the former cannot be implemented due to any reason. Perform these sub-processes and their steps in the order below:
-
Configure LANCOM device lines to be set as COM line
-
Install the CAPI Faxmodem virtual driver on the machine where GFI FAXmaker installed.
-
As done in the previous method, configure the ISDN Interface and LANCAPI configuration from the LANCOM device configuration.
Note: In order to use the LANCOM device using this method there is no need to activate the Fax Gateway option.
-
-
Configure LANCOM device lines on GFI FAXmaker
LANCAPI should be running on the same machine where GFI FAXmaker is installed and detected successfully. Follow these steps to configure LANCOM Device Lines.
-
Go to GFI FAXmaker Configuration > Lines/Devices/Properties.
-
Click on the ‘Detect’ button.
-
The LANCOM device line should be detected as a COM device using the Generic Modem profile. In this method, the users are only allowed to use one line instead of the two lines available per BRI (Basic Rate Interface) line channel.
-
At this stage, the Lines on the LANCOM devices should be available for use.
